Stopped by El Mesón today specifically for the gorditas and they absolutely hit. I ordered one carnitas en salsa verde with beans and one guisado de puerco en chile rojo with beans. I meant to add nopales to the guisado de puerco but they ended up on the carnitas instead--and honestly, it was a win. The nopales added a slight tang and freshness that balanced the rich, tender carnitas perfectly.
Both gorditas were thick, hearty, and deeply flavorful, with well-seasoned fillings and a satisfying bite that keeps you full. The pork in chile rojo was especially good--savory, tender, and nicely spiced without overpowering the meat.
They also serve complimentary chips with homemade salsa verde and salsa roja. The green salsa is smooth and mild, great for dipping, while the red salsa brings a solid, lingering heat that spice lovers will appreciate.
This is one of my go-to South Side spots, and every visit reminds me why. Comfort food done right, bold flavors, and always satisfying.

Great food, great drinks. I highly recommend the tamarindo michelada. Plenty of TVs for entertaining but it is always on a Spanish channel with no subtitles or sound
